Sustainable Living

Locomotive Lofts was designed and built in accordance with the United States Green Building Council's LEED program.

"LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is transforming the way we think about how our buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe. Comprehensive and flexible, LEED is a green building tool that addresses the entire building lifecycle recognizing best-in-class building strategies.

"At its core, LEED is a program that provides third-party verification of green buildings. Building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. Prerequisites and credits differ for each rating system, and teams choose the best fit for the project. Learn more About LEED and about the LEED rating systems." (www.usgbc.org)

A Record of Sustainability

a.m. Rodriguez Inc. and Green Development / Sota Construction Services, Inc. are very committed to sustainable construction.  Between the two companies, we have completed eleven local Pittsburgh LEED projects, ranging in certification level from registered to the highest level of Platinum. One of the projects, the Sota Construction Services, Inc. home office, has received the fifth highest LEED score ever achieved in the United States.

A Greener Building

Locomotive Lofts features a host of green construction strategies that help make it better for the environment and, in turn, better for your wallet.

  • Location
Locomotive Lofts is located near major employment, shopping, entertainment, and, most importantly, public transportation, helping you minimize your carbon footprint.
  • Embodied Energy
"The greenest building is that which is already built."
Embodied energy is the energy it took to create the original steel, brick and concrete of the existing building nearly one hundred years ago. Because part of Locomotive Lofts was already an existing building, that building's embodied energy was reused, so no more energy had to be wasted on recreating those materials.
  • Insulation
To keep your utility bills to a minimum, Locomotive Lofts is insulated to very high R-value levels. Walls are nearly R-30, and the roof is R-50, far exceeding code requirements. Locomotive Lofts is also very airtight so that unwanted drafts are not present.
  • Ventilation
"Build it tight and ventilate it right!"
Worried that you'll need fresh air? Each apartment has a central exhaust fan with intake grilles located in the kitchen and each bathroom, as well as an outdoor intake vent called a "trickle vent". This fan is activated by a pilot switch, also in the kitchen and each bathroom, which lights up when activated since the fan is very quiet.
  • HVAC
Our HVAC equipment has the latest technology that lets you control your residence's temperature from anywhere using your internet connection. Forgot to turn down your thermostat while you are away? No problem-there's an app for that!
  • Lighting
Lighting is LED or high efficiency fluorescent to provide great color rendition while saving you dollars on your energy bills. Day lighting of the residences is provided through large and well-placed windows that use the latest insulated glass and low-e technology, so it not only reduces energy cost and consumption, but adds charm and fresh air to your home as well.
  • Greener Building Materials
For starters, we've used only lower VOC paints and adhesives throughout the building to keep you healthy and your air clean. All the appliances in every unit are Energy Star rated to reduce your energy costs. Greener flooring was installed throughout, including high quality bamboo floors in each apartment and extremely durable Marmoleum floors (made from cork, linseed oil and sawdust) in the bathrooms. The hall floors are also made of a combination of recycled rubber and cork. Finally, all steel and drywall used in the project is made from recycled materials. Living at Locomotive Lofts will help you reduce your impact on the environment and provide you with a healthier (and greener) lifestyle.
